Puerto Viejo is located on the Southern Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica about 4 and 1/2 driving hours away from San José International Airport.
If you are coming from San José by direct public bus (leaving S.J. daily from the MEPE bus station at 6:00am, 10am, 12:00pm, 2:00pm, 4:00pm) or by private vehicle, have the driver let you off at the first “Playa Negra” bus stop just as the highway meets the beach in front of the “Pulperia Violeta” 1 km before the village (if you have more than just a bag, better get off the bus in the village center and take a cab for $ 4 to Chimuri Beach).
